Scenario
Fred's elderly mother, June, is living alone. Although still quite
active, she is becoming frail and Fred worries about her. It is not easy
for him to check on her more than once a week so he uses 2CUROK to help him.
He has an old PC (with modem and sound) spare so he assembles it in June's home. He
sets the PC up so that it can access the internet using his ISP account over the
modem. He then installs and configures 2CUROK and he tells June to leave the PC on
all the time, and to press the keyboard once a day.
One Monday evening, 2CUROK screen saver is running. Because June has not touched the PC all day, 2CUROK
starts playing a reminder sound at 8:00pm (so the alarm doesn't go off in the
middle of the night). June hears it and presses a key to
reset the countdown.
The next morning, Tuesday, June has an episode and falls in her
home. She is unable to get up and call for help. Fred is not due to
check on her for at least several days. Fred has set the countdown to be 1
day, so after lying on the floor for a day the 2CUROK countdown
finishes and the alarms start at 8:00pm. The first alarm is the starting the
CD player, as a gentle reminder for June. There is no response so after
another 15 minutes a highly annoying siren-like sound starts playing.
There is no response so after another 5 minutes the PC connects to the internet
and sends an email to Fred, and to 6 other friends and family, then it
disconnects from the internet.
Fred isn't due to check his email till 9am, the next day,
at work, but his cousin Tess, is at work on the other side of the world and she
calls Fred at home to tell him she received the warning. He phones his
mother's home and there is no answer. He phones one of June's neighbours
who then knocks on June's door but there is not answer. Fred rushes to
June's home and lets himself in with his key. He finds her and calls and
ambulance.
